Co-op
Oro Verde, established in 1999, is a group of small-scale coffee and cocoa producers located in the high mountains of northern Peru. In the early 1990s, coffee producers were given assistance in organizing themselves into democratic cooperatives, and the members of Oro Verde began working together with the hope of improving their standard of living by marketing their coffee more effectively, and in unison. They became Fair Trade certified in 2002, and now have 1,203 coffee and cacao producers in total, more than two-thirds of which belong to the Chanca Lamista indigenous group.
Productive Investment
The Oro Verde Co-op has been working on a social and environmental projects, focusing on the reforestation of degraded areas of rainforest through the planting of 2 million native trees, promoting sustainable agriculture and preserving the cultural heritage of the Quichua people.
Developing a diversity the crops has led to multiple revenue streams for its members for smallholder farmers, while also being able to add more nutrients back into the soil. Products grown in the shade of coffee trees include cocoa, honey and cane sugar.
